NWYA PRESIDENTS CUP FINAL
ASHTON ATHLETIC YOUTH 1 WALSHAW SPORTS CLUB YOUTH 2
Walshaw clinched the Presidents with two goals in the last few minutes at Warrington Town Fc.
The game played throughout in driving rain began with Ashton on top Walshaw were struggling to put their normal neat passing game together and it was no surprise when on 15 minutes they took the lead, a ball was worked wide and the whipped across the face of goal where it was finished by the Ashton striker. Walshaw were struggling to cope with Ashton’s counter attacking play and on twenty five minutes they conceded a penalty when Jake Brooks hauled down the Ashton forward in the box luckily for Walshaw the ball cannoned back of the post and was cleared to safety .
This let off seemed to wake Walshaw up from their slumber and they bagan to ompose their neat attacking play on the League Champions before the break Brad Howarth had a great chance to bring them level but put his shot wide of the advancing custodian and Kieran Pickup nearly forced the full back int putting through his own goal but the ball squirmed agonisingly wide.#
The second period was predominately bossed by the Sycamore Road outfit but they had to be on their guard against the occasional speedy counter attack. The worsening conditions made chances hard to come by but Walshaw finally got their rewards when Tom Cosgrove was upended on the edge of the Ashton box Mike Downing stepped up and rifled a shot hard a low to the keepers left and Walshaw were level.
Most of the second period have seen Ashton guilty of blatant time wasting and this came back to haunt them when in the 3rd of five added minutes Jake Brooks made a superb goal line clearance the ball was swept to the Ashton end where Cosgrove whipped a delightful cross over which was buried by a bullet header Kieran Pickup .
Jordan Hardman lifted the trophy for a side that has been together for nearly managed by Kev Morris,Jim Cosgrove and coached by Mike Langhorn .
