Walshaw travelled to Hyde United to take on Hollinwood in the final of the prestigious Gilchrist Trophy.
If ever a game mirrored Walshaw's season this was it ,by halftime Hollinwood should have been dead and buried chances fell to Richard Woodward and top scorer Lee Gaskell but all were spurned and somehow the teams went in level at the break.
The second period saw a couple more chances spurned before Gaskell opened the scoring with his head after an excellent cross by Woodward. Hollinwood had a brief ten minute spell where they threatned but Walshaw held firm with Waltham and Stewart excellent at the heart of the defence . Shaw again gained the iniatitive with the outstading Dominic Slavin at the heart of everything. But if you don't kill teams off it can come back to haunt you and with twelve minutes remaining Jordan Hulme was robbed thirty yards from goal and the ball was whipped in to be bundled home inside the six yard box to take the game into extra time. Walshaw continued to carve out chance after chance Brierley Gaskell and Chapman all missed the target before Phil Dean's delightful free kick was nodded home by Lee Chapman to give Shaw the lead . Hollinwood had the last say though and with two minutes left an over hit cross nestled in the far corner and we were heading for penalties.
Chapman opened the account for Walshaw then two misses each before Hollinwood levelled , Brierley put Shaw ahead and another miss for Wood gave veteran Mark
Stewart the chance to win the cup which he took and sent the Bury side and their supporters wild with delight
Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
